You are strongly encouraged to leave warm clothing and an extra flashlight and batteries at the aid station you plan to visit at night. Onset of Hypothermia is one of the leading causes of drops at night!
100K PACERS:
Pacers are allowed beginning at the Diamond Peak aid station for the 100K event. This is the first (and only) aid station accessible by car. It’s roughly at the “half-way” point (mile 28.5) of the 100K event.
Looking for a PACER? Or want to PACE a RUNNER? The Runner/Pacer Forum will be back in 2025!
PACER INFORMATION:
Pacers are allowed solely as a safety consideration for fatigued runners in the remote and rugged back country areas of the Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs. Absolutely no physical or mechanical aid may be given by the pacer to assist the runner over difficult sections of the trail (except in medical emergencies), and no food, fluids or supplies of any kind may be carried for the runner (no muling). Runners may only have one safety runner at a time. Tunnel Creek does not have vehicle access. Aid station personnel will make no arrangements to transport pacers or crew.
No competitor who is not actually taking part in the competition shall accompany any competitor during the competition nor shall any competitor be permitted to receive aid or refreshment from anyone during the progress of the competition except within 100 meters on either side of the fully stocked aid stations.
Pacers must check in at Diamond Peak Aid Station. They will be issued a pacer bib number and are required to sign an event waiver. Pacers can also sign the waiver and pick up a bib at packet pickup on Friday. This helps us make sure they are readily identifiable by our aid station staff, make sure we have enough food and beverage on the course for everyone and account for their safety in the same manner as our registered runners. Pacers should be self-sufficient, please leave Honey Stinger products for the runners. Pacers should carry their own gels as they do not pay an entry fee.
MEDICAL ARRANGEMENTS:
There will be First Aid/CPR qualified individuals and radio and /or cell phone communications at each aid station. There will be medical staff at key aid stations and at the start/finish. Safety patrol personnel will be deployed within each division between aid stations.
AID STATION STAPLES:
All aid stations feature:
- First Endurance EFS electrolyte replacement drink. This is a high quality drink and you can read more about it here: First Endurance EFS Drink
- A variety of Honey Stinger Gels, Waffles and Chews
- S Caps
- Our aid stations among the best stocked aid stations you will experience. During the daytime hours of the race the usual ultra-race fair with salty snacks and PB&J made with gluten free bread. Once the sun goes down the kitchens open and provide full hot meals and breakfast items in the early morning hours. Every aid station (except Bull Wheel and Spooner Summit, these are fluid-only type stops) will have at least one vegan option.
Course Description
The Tahoe Rim Trail 100K Endurance Run takes place on high elevation alpine and sub-alpine forest single track trails and dirt roads in the Carson Spur of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The event is located on the east side of Lake Tahoe. All distances begin and end at the Western Nevada College in Carson City, Nevada, which is at 4,888 feet, also the lowest point on the course. The highest point of the event is just below the summit of 9,214-foot Snow Valley Peak (which also provides one of the best views on the course). The course is marked with highly visible fluorescent orange flagging with a highly reflective tip.
THE START at Western Nevada College immediately jumps onto a single-track trail leading to Ash Canyon Road. There will be a water-only stop, Kick Ash Water Station (mile 5.5), towards the top of Ash Canyon. From there you will use an old jeep road leading you to the highest point on course, Snow Valley Peak A/S. The distance to Snow Valley Peak AS is approximately 9.5 miles and 4,200 feet of climbing.
From there you will turn right (North) on the Tahoe Rim Trail, where the iconic views of Marlette and Tahoe will beckon you to stop for a photo opp! About a 3 mile descent will find you at an intersection, where the TRT crosses a dirt road. Continue on the TRT another ½ mile to the Hobart A/S at 8120 feet and approximately 12.5 miles into the race. Get ready for a trail running party at this aid station. Famous for great food, smoothies, and a walk-up bar.
After leaving the Hobart A/S the Tahoe Rim Trail climbs past Marlette Peak (Photo Opportunity alert!) before descending on an awesome single track to the Tunnel Creek A/S 17 miles into the race. Tunnel Creek A/S will be your home base during this race. As a 50-mile runner you will come to this aid station 2 times. It is a perfect place for a drop bag for your nighttime clothing, headlamps, and extra hydration sources. This is a huge aid station with an amazing array of food choices, a medical staff and medical tent.
Pay attention to the directions from the aid station staff at this aid station. It is your responsibility to be familiar with the course instructions. Be sure you know where to go!
Upon leaving Tunnel Creek A/S, the 100K/100M course will travel approximately 7-miles north along a single-track section of the Tahoe Rim Trail. This section is mostly rolling with breath-taking views of both Lake Tahoe and Washoe Valley. The Bull Wheel A/S is a small water stop 3 miles from Tunnel Creek. DO NOT LEAVE THIS AID STATION WITHOUT A FULL HYDRATION PACK OR BOTTLES! You have about 8.5 miles before arriving at the Diamond Peak A/S mile 28.5. Many runners run out of fluids on this section. **I highly recommend using at least three hand bottles or a full hydration pack for this section of the course**
At the Tyrolean downhill trail junction the course makes a sharp left turn and drops down towards Incline Village, offering spectacular views of the North Shore of Lake Tahoe. This section of the course will provide views of Lake Tahoe not many people except locals have seen. The Tyrolean downhill trail will plunge down the mountain for approximately four miles and a loss of 2,000 feet of elevation, following the creek with many dives, twists and turns. (The course will follow single-track trail downhill. Within the first two miles after turning off the Tahoe Rim Trail, this section is a world class Mtn bike downhill trail. They have Supercross style jumps—stay off of them. There is no agreement to keep bikes off the trail, so they are flying downhill. Be aware of bikers, after two miles the trail becomes one with the Mtn bikes. It’s a good idea to not have music on in this section.) As the trail flattens out towards the bottom you will come into the Tyrolean Village area directly behind homes. Once you come to the Diamond Peak Lodge parking lot area, proceed to the lodge where the aid station is located.
This is the Diamond Peak A/S at 28.5 miles. A great aid station with many food options, indoor bathrooms, and the only drive-to aid station for your crew. This A/S has medical staff available. It is imperative that your crew members only park in designated parking spots and not clog the roadway. During the event, the race is accountable for keeping the roadway accessible by residents of Tyrolean Village and the Fire Department!
There is absolutely no crewing outside of the Diamond Peak aid station! Crews that do not adhere to this will result in their runner being DQ’d from the race – Yes, it is that important!
From there, the course will follow the dirt service road up the ski run and onto the Crystal Ridge ski run, then up and over the top of Diamond Peak resort at 8540 ft for a 1700-foot climb in just under 2 miles. This climb is steep! Take your time – it will not make or break your race. Stop and catch your breath and turn around for the most spectacular view of Lake Tahoe you will see on the entire course.
When you reach the top of the ski run (bull wheel), a sharp right-hand turn will drop you down to the Bull Wheel A/S (water and electrolyte drink only. No food, no ice) turn right onto the Tahoe Rim Trail. The course then returns to the Tunnel Creek A/S (Mile 33.5) for the second time.
From the Tunnel Creek A/S, the 100K course follows the Tahoe Rim Trail south (straight through the A/S) back towards the Hobart A/S mile 38.5. During the daytime, this 5-mile section will be hot.
At the Hobart A/S Mile 38.5, be sure to let the staff there know that you are returning from Tunnel Creek and you are a 100K-mile runner. You will head back up to Snow Valley Peak 3 miles and 900 foot climb.
At Snow Valley Peak A/S mile 42, turn around and come back down to Hobart A/S.
At the Hobart A/S Mile 45, be sure to let the staff there know that you are returning from Snow Valley Peak and you are a 100K runner and fill your water pack or bottles! Leaving Hobart A/S for the final time, you will go back on the Tahoe Rim Trail about a half mile, to the intersection that leads you onto the new Capital 2 Tahoe Trail (C2T). There will be a sign that says, Capital to Tahoe Trail TO FINISH. After about 2 miles it will come to a road, you will cross the road and continue on this trail for 2.25 miles. This is the same trail you took on the initial climb from the start—but instead of going up to Snow Valley Peak, you will make a sharp left turn at the next intersection and continue down the C2T trail. There will be a sign that says, Capital to Tahoe Trail TO FINISH. You will continue on this trail for about 5.5 miles to Waterfall A/S. All brand new single-track trail with lots of trees and shade. (Be sure to leave Hobart A/S with full packs or bottles as it will be 10+ miles without an aid station!)
This section of single-track, called the Capital 2 Tahoe trail, is well-shaded and weaves through the forest, ending at the Waterfall A/S. Here, prepare yourself for another fun and flowy section of single-track, albeit sun-exposed and dropping into the hot temperatures (90s!) of the valley. This is the Ash to Kings trail. Again you are still approximately 7 miles from the finish, do not leave without topping off your packs/ bottles!
The Ash to Kings trail merges with the Ash Creek trail and back to the start/finish area inside the baseball stadium at Western Nevada College. In all, this new course totals approximately 63 miles and 10,750 feet of elevation gain and similar elevation loss.
Remember, there are no areas for crew to take care of you, you must rely on these amazing aid stations. You will be amazed at the food they will have for you and the level of support you will find. Keep in mind this course averages about 8,000 feet of elevation. It will get cold at night no matter how warm it gets during the day. But also keep in mind the finish line is in Carson City—in mid-July the afternoon temperatures will be in the mid-90’s!!! Also, the air is very dry, normally less than 10% humidity. Follow the best guidelines from Sports Medicine Science and drink to thirst. We will have plenty of water and First Endurance EFS electrolyte drink.
