Ultra runners, do you suffer from nausea?

June 17, 2019

Do you get nausea and vomiting frequently during races? Have you ever had to drop out of a race due to nausea and vomiting? Have nausea or vomiting affected your race performance? The TWOFUN study (Treatment With Ondansetron For Ultra-marathon associated Nausea and vomiting) is being done to help runners find solutions.

This study will be conducted at the 2019 Tahoe Rim Trail races to look at the effectiveness of a commonly used medication called ondansetron (brand name Zofran) to treat nausea and/or vomiting in runners during a race. Study runners will randomly be given either the medication or a placebo prior to the race to carry with them or store in drop bags in case symptoms arise. If runners continue to have symptoms and have gotten the placebo medication, we will have the ability to give the medication at one of the medical aid stations. We will also ask runners to fill out a quick survey (less than 20 questions) at the race finish or by internet immediately after the race. We are looking to enroll as many participants as possible. There is no cost to you to participate in this study.

If you are interested in participating or want additional information, please contact Andy Pasternak at avpiv711@sbcglobal.net

42 Days!

June 7, 2019

Yep, only 42 days until the start of the Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs
100 Mile – 50 Mile – 55K!

I hope everyone’s training is going well and you’re getting in your fine tuning for the TRTER coming up in 42 days!

I was checking on how many rooms we have in our reserved blocks with the four hotels we have discounted rates with. With the short summer season here in Northern Nevada and Lake Tahoe many of the hotels are completely booked except for our blocked out rooms. But they can’t hold them forever.

In particular the Gold Dust West has a June 18th deadline before they open the book to other reservations. This one is the one that has Good Sam RV park with pool, hot tub and showers, plus several restaurants in the Casino. This will be a bus pick up site for hotel and RV park guests only.

We have rooms at the Plaza Hotel still available as well as Wyndham Gardens Max Casino across the street which is the main bus pick up site and walking distance to the packet pick-up in downtown Carson City.

Then for those of you that want a deluxe room with the big fluffy bed, we have the Courtyard Marriott. This will have a bus pick up for hotel guests.

At Crystal Bay on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe, The Tahoe Biltmore will be the major parking site and bus pick-up site for those coming from I-80 from California. They are offering rooms at $109 for a standard room and $149 for a private cottage. Speedboat Beach is a short walk away! This is the main bus pick-up site and not just for guests. It’s for everyone coming in from the I-80 corridor.

Information about and links to all these hotels are on our website: https://trter.com/logistics/
That’s it for now. A final email blast with race weekend instructions will go out a week or 10 days prior to the event, stay tuned!

Take care and we’ll see you in 42 days!

George Ruiz- Race Director

100 Days!

April 10, 2019

Wow, it’s amazing how fast time zooms by. I hope the first four months of 2019 has treated you well and your training and plans for the Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs are in high gear. Everytime I open the TRTER web page I see the count down clock and today it says 100 days. If you haven’t checked out our website I encourage you to do so, there is lots of information that will make your TRTER race weekend less stressful. https://trter.com/

I have some big announcements to make!

Firstly I’m pleased to announce that our on-course nutrition will be provided by Honey Stinger replacing Clif Bar for gels and bars. Their gels are yummy and they provide non-caffeinated as well as caffeinated gels–both will be on course. We will also have the Honey Stinger Waffles on course. If you haven’t tried them, they are delicious and easy to get down in the middle of a tough Ultra. Welcome Aboard Honey Stinger!

Secondly, and most importantly to beer lovers, we are welcoming The Fox Brewing as our beer supplier this year. Many of you returning runners know The Fox as the place we do the meet and greet Thursday night before the race, and also they offer a coupon for food and drinks race weekend. They are right across the street from the Nevada legislative ground where our packet pickup and race briefing take place. They built a brewing facility right on site and are brewing great beer. I know we will have an IPA on course and, of course, the Ultra Lounge at the finish line. I’m doing in-depth research as to the second brew to offer… I know you will enjoy their beer as much as what Brewers Cabinet provided over the past five years. Thank you Brewers Cabinet for supporting us and providing us with great brew!

While I know we have runners from all around the globe that attend the TRTER, the majority of runners are from Northern California and Northern Nevada. I don’t have to explain to you that the Sierra Nevada mountains have had a stellar winter. Record snow fall in February has buried the mountains in a deep blanket of white. Awesome for skiers and snow boarders, but bad for races that share these mountains and occur before August. We will undoubtedly have snow drifts on course for this years race, how much will depend on mother nature and how much she heats things up over the next 100 days.

In light of all the snow, we have decided to not have a training run this year. I realize this has been an immensely popular event to get into the TRTER vibe, however, it’s extremely difficult to put on when the course is still buried in snow in early June. It’s difficult to provide aid stations above 8000 feet and it’s difficult for runners that are familiar with the course to stay on track let alone those of you that have never been on the course. I hope you all understand.

With only 100 days until race day, if you are injured and on the fence weather to run or not, or you have a scheduling conflict or life is just getting in the way, we have many on the wait list wanting to get into the event. Yes, we are beyond the refund cut-off date, and no we do not carry forward registrations to the following year. However, we are a non-profit event and your registration will go towards supporting a premier event and that takes a lot of $$$ to put on. We also donate about $25,000 a year to some amazing organizations that are supporting people and families in need. If you know you can’t run, give another runner a shot.

For you 100 mile runners that have not completed your trail work requirements, time is ticking away. Yes I have received some completed trail work forms, but probably less that 10% of the 100 mile field. You all know the consequences. Don’t make me be the bad guy. There are so many trail work opportunities country wide, give your quivering quads a day’s rest and give back to the trail system that you love and train on. https://trter.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/100m-volunteerform2019.pdf

Our parking and busing situation is no different than last year. We plan on busing as close to 100% of the runners as possible from Carson City and North Lake Tahoe Crystal Bay. This is necessary to provide as much parking for your families and crew at Spooner. We are bursting at the seams with 100 mile and 50 mile runners this year, and we all know how many friends and family support their runners nowadays. Please make plans to comply with our busing schedule. More information on pickup locations and shuttles back can be found on our website.

Lastly, if you need lodging, we have discounted rooms at four different location In Carson City, all with bus pick ups. I encourage you to book something if you haven’t done so. Last year rooms sold out and we have added Gold Dust West Hotel Casino and RV Park. Yes, RV park with pool and hot tub. So check them out and make your reservations, all listed under lodging on our website.

That’s it for now. Stay healthy for this next 100 days so we can see you all bright and early at Spooner Lake Nevada State Park July 20th!
Cheers!

George Ruiz – Race Director
Big THANKS to our Sponsors!

TRTER 2017 Wrap Up

August 8, 2017

It’s hard to believe that a week has passed since the Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs 100 mile, 50 Mile and 55K. Mother Nature provided us with nice warm weather, a little snow to play in and a spectacular sunset over Lake Tahoe. It was a magical sight that will not be forgotten by  those who were lucky enough to be on a ridgeline on the Tahoe Rim Trail Saturday night. I’ve seen a lot of photos from runners that captured the moment.

Congratulations to our race winners:

Ryan Weible of South Lake Tahoe, CA won the 100 mile in 18:29:09 and the incomparable Roxanne Woodhouse  of Weaverville, CA won her fourth TRT 100 mile in 24:42:44. For the first time in TRTER history a women won overall in any of the distances. Rory Bosio from Truckee CA won the 50 Mile race in 8:27:56, also a new women’s course record.  Bob Shebest of Windsor, CA won the Men’s race in 8:38:59. Ben Tedore of Reno, NV ran the third fastest time on the 55K course to win in 4:45:47. Rebecca Murillo of San Francisco, CA led the women with a winning time of 5:58:57.

To all of you that made it to the finish, congratulations. For those of you that took the start of this journey but didn’t make it, congratulations for having the courage to start and giving it all you had.

I’d like to also thank the amazing volunteers that help make this race so special. The ski lodge at Hobart, the huge aid station at Tunnel Creek, Alice and Wonderland at the bottom of the Red House, the little water stop perched on the ridgeline Bull Wheel, the Diamond Peak lodge deck, the boy scouts that come out to greet every runner by name on Snow Valley Peak, the Flintstones at Stonehenge 50 Mile, and the cub scouts with the water stop at the Spooner summit turn to the finish.  And how about the finish line Ultra Lounge vibe? Lake side on Spooner Lake, with great food, great beer from the Brewer’s Cabinet, the Monsters of Massage. And the merchandise store all right there for you.  And the best-looking finish line chute with the international flags. I can’t forget to thank Kati Bell and Dan Fuller for the hard work to make the shuttles work so well all weekend. They are all an amazing crew and it’s an honor to work with them.

Thank you to our Sponsors Patagonia, Clif Bar, Diamond Peak Ski Resort, Reno Running Company, Brewers Cabinet, Succeed SCaps, Black Diamond, Starbucks Roasting Plant, The Fox Brew Pub, Injinji, Ryp Wear, High Desert Drop Bags, Squirrels Nut Butter, Mars, Carson City Visitors Bureau, Joe Trailman Gaiters, Monsters of Massage and the Bodhi Tree massage school.

The 2018 will be July 21-22, 2018. Registration for the 2018 lottery will open on December 3rd, 2017.

All the best for your running endeavors for the remainder of 2017. Be well.

TRTER 2017: The Final Details

Hello Runners,

The race will have live timing on Ultra Signup here: https://ultrasignup.com/live/live.htm?dtid=23561

The check points will be at Tunnel Creek when you come out of Red House Loop for all runners. For 50 Mile and 100 Mile runners: there is a check point at Diamond Peak, and again when returning to Tunnel Creek. All runners will check in at Snow Valley Peak. 100 Milers check in at Stonehenge 50 Mile Aid Station, and finally, the Finish. These splits will be live so your crew and family can follow your progress.

After months of planning and preparation and training on your part, the time is finally upon us to put it all into action. The first and foremost concern for everyone is the course condition. As you all know, the Sierra Nevada experienced record snowfall this winter. The good news is the course is in great shape and will be 95% dirt! Yes, there will be snow on the course but it is limited to snowfields on the highest and north-facing segments of the trail.

Our team of Volunteer Course Markers have spent the last four days marking trail and making the snow passages as safe as possible for you to have a positive experience during the race. Steep banks have steps cut into them now but they may not hold up for the duration of the race. With the warm daytime temperatures, we may have very little snow on the course by race day as it is melting very fast. There is water, especially on the Red House loop, so everyone’s feet will get wet.

Keep in mind our course elevation averages about 8000 feet above sea level. Only three sections fall below the 8000 foot level: the start/finish area, the bottom of the Red House loop, and Diamond Peak Ski Lodge. So, when you look at a forecast for South Lake Tahoe, or Incline Village it will be warmer than it will be at 8000 feet or above. The temperatures during the race is an important topic. You can expect daytime temps to be in the low 80’s (fahrenheit) but nighttime and early morning temps to fall in the mid-40’s to mid-50’s. For those of you doing the 100 mile you must consider warmer clothing in your drop bags for the later morning hours. Also, much of our course is on exposed ridge lines, hence the name Tahoe Rim Trail. We often have strong breezes in the late afternoon and early evenings, so a light wind breaker or long sleeve shirt is almost a must. We will have first class Patagonia gear for sale at the Friday packet pick-up and during the event by the Ultra Lounge. Hypothermia is one of our leading causes of 100 mile runners not finishing the race.

Our Race Medical Director, Andy Pasternak MD, MS, writes an informative letter to participants every year. Click Here and Read It. If you haven’t noticed, we have a group discount on Reach Air Medical Services (Calstar) air ambulance and you should have a look. If you were to require a helicopter ride out of the backcountry due to an injury and medical condition it’s a minimum $20,000 to be transported to Reno. Membership to this program is less than the cost of running shoes and it’s good throughout most of the western states.

We also have a new and beautiful race website (thank you Tangerine Design). It is packed with Race Information and all you need to know about the race logistics. Contact shannon@tangerinedesignweb.com if something is missing. She is always happy to help and improve the site. Check it out!

For those of you that are new to the Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs, our aid stations are some of the best you will experience at an ultra-distance race. I realize many races say this, however with the nature of our course being a double 50-mile loop for the 100-mile runners our aid stations are set up like small villages in the backcountry. Many food options are available during the daytime with your typical ultra-food options (NOTE: our bread of choice is gluten free). Once the sun begins to set the kitchen is OPEN at all these aid stations and you will be amazed at your food options. Unless you have some very special dietary need you will find just about anything you can imagine at the aid stations. You don’t need to pack food in your drop bags.

I’d like to thank Clif Bar for the on-course Clif Shot Gels, Clif Bar Bloks, and Clif Bars. The electrolyte replacement drink on-course will be First Endurance EFS. This is a very high-end drink that is not sweet at all, it’s very easy to drink. You can read more about it on their website: https://firstendurance.com/nutrition/efs-drink.html

100-mile drop bags must be left in their appropriate spots at the Friday check-in at the Nevada State Legislative grounds 401 S. Carson Street, Carson City, NV 89701-4747. There is a large courtyard where the check-in and mandatory race briefing takes place. We will also have our amazing TRTER merchandise store open and sell the latest running clothing from Patagonia. Friday Check-in Parking is one block west on Curry St. There is a public parking area behind The Fox BrewPub. If your drop bags are not left at this check-in site there is no guarantee they will make it to the aid station of your choice: Tunnel Creek, Hobart, Diamond Peak or Stonehenge 50 mile. These aid stations retrieve them by 3 pm Friday and take them to their locations to set up Friday evening. 50-milers, you are welcome to check in on Friday and leave your drop bags and attend the course briefing for the latest information about the course conditions. 50-mile runners will be able to leave their drop bags for Tunnel Creek and Diamond Peak at the State Park Parking Lot upon arrival at the race. Hobart aid station drop bag delivery will only be available on Friday. There is no drop bag service for 55K runners. However, you are also welcome to come and check in on Friday and avoid the checking in on race morning. Because it’s very difficult to get from the backcountry aid stations to the race start, drop bag returns will not be available until Sunday afternoon. They will be dropped off at the top of the State Park parking lot.

Race morning! For those of you taking the shuttle bus from the Plaza Hotel or Marriott Courtyard in Carson City. The buses are sold out! The 100-mile runners will load buses at 3:15 am at the Plaza (Southside curb) and they will stop at the Marriott Courtyard at approximately 3:30 am. They will take you to the entrance of the Spooner Lake Nevada State Park. When you exit the bus you will proceed down the hill all the way to Spooner Lake where the race Start is. Do not leave your finish line bag at the Stonehenge 50-mile aid station that you will walk past, this is not the finish and you will not have a finish line bag when you want it. Finish line drop bags will be at the Ultra Lounge.

50/55K Runners, taking the shuttle buses from Carson City will board the buses at 4:15am at the Plaza Hotel (southside curb) and at the Marriott Courtyard at approximately 4:30 am. There will be shuttle service to take you back to your hotel after you have finished your race and refreshed yourself at the Ultra Lounge.

Race parking: The racing morning parking will be at the water craft inspection site. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1SOHUslf14sGBCe9kZapew39CcNA&usp=sharing
There will be lit highway message sign boards with race parking information. The map here shows you where this is located on Highway 28 by the Highway 50 intersection. There will be 5 shuttle buses to shuttle you into the State Park.

Because we have limited parking space this year no family or crew will be allowed to use this parking area. Family and crew will have to use the Spooner Lake State Park parking. They must pay a parking fee for a permit that will be good all day or they will be ticketed.

Runners with crew members going to Diamond Peak Ski Resort. There is only parking at the lower lot. There is no parking at the upper lodge parking, that is for volunteers only. There is no parking along Ski Way street as it blocks access to the housing beyond the ski resort. Parking there will result in towing at your crew’s expense. There is NO CREWING OUTSIDE OF THE AID STATION. ANY CREWING UP THE ROAD IN TYROLAIN Village will result in disqualification of you the runner! No exceptions! We also have a 9 pm noise curfew at the lodge, please be respectful of those living close to the parking lot. No crew in the parking lot. This is no joke, we have very serious restrictions here and it’s up to you to inform your crew. Violations of these rules will result in your disqualification!

Post-race will be an all-out Fiesta vibe down at the Ultra Lounge. Your race bib will entitle you to one meal at the La Enchilada food truck. Drinks are not included at the food truck but are available in the Ultra Lounge just a few steps away. The one meal is for runners only, pacers and family/crew will need to purchase their food. The food truck takes credit cards or cash. La Enchilada has some wonderful food options including non-meat items and seafood options. The Ultra Lounge will have the cold drinks including Tahoe Beer provided by our beer sponsor The Brewers Cabinet. Music playing, massage on Saturday afternoon by the Bodhi Tree massage school, and then after 5 pm on Saturday the Monsters of Massage will be on site and all-day Sunday to put the hurt on those sore quads. Yes, they take tips so bring some cash!

We want to thank our Sponsors: Patagonia for the amazing clothing and race shirts, Clif Bar, Black Diamond, Diamond Peak Ski Resort, Starbucks Roasting Plant, Squirrel’s Nut Butter, Carson City Visitors Bureau, Mars Candy, Brewers Cabinet for Tahoe Beer, Reno Running Company, injinji, Succeed S Caps, Ryp Wear, High Desert Drop Bags, Joe Trailman Gaiters, The Fox BrewPub and Tangerine Design.

We have 10% off coupons for you at the Fox and at Reno Running Company. Click this link to print them and bring them for your deals!

Lastly, there is a meet and greet at the Fox patio Thursday 6 pm.
All of us volunteers work so hard to provide you the best possible ultra-running experience and are looking forward to seeing you this weekend. Be sure to thank or hug a volunteer!

All the best,
