2021

Congrats to 2021 TRTERs

July 30, 2021

We came and conquered! After two years the Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs party in the mountains took place with a new start / finish venue and a new course featuring a monstrous climb in the first 8 miles and a long, hot finish back to Carson City.

In all 144 runners took the start of the 100 mile and 98 found their way back to the finish for a 68% finishing rate. Historically we average 70%. The 50 Mile had 146 runners take the start and 129 finished for a 88% finishing rate. The 55K had 114 runners take the start and 109 finished for a 95% finishing rate.

I think we can all agree that the new start with the 4,200+ foot climb up Ash Canyon added another level of difficulty. While many found the start climb hard, it was the last 11 miles to Carson City that everyone talked about at the finish tent.

I have good news! As stated in the 100 mile race briefing, a new trail is almost completed that will link Carson City to the Tahoe Rim Trail, called the Capital to Tahoe Trail. Runners will come down a flowy 14 miles of single track back to Carson City and Western Nevada College. Will it be easier? No. But single-track is always better than a dirt road….

Many have asked if photos are available yet and today they just became available from photographer Keith Facchino. They are available here: https://facchinophotography.zenfolio.com/f48507537

Our aid station captains and their volunteers were so excited to be back in action. In all it felt pretty good to get back to normal again and be amongst our trail running community.

I’d like to thank our sponsors that help make this an elite level event. Patagonia, Topo Athletic, Injinji Toe Socks, The Fox Brew Pub, Diamond Peak Ski Resort, Western Nevada College, Black Diamond, Squirrels Nut Butter, Succeed S Caps, First Endurance Sports Nutrition, Honey Stinger Sport Nutrition, Reno Running Company, RYP Wear, Starbucks Minden Roasting Plant, High Desert Drop Bags. TRTER Going Cupless!

June 29, 2021

That’s right! This is the year we go cupless. All participants will receive this TRTER customized HydraPak cup and carabiner to secure it to a pack, waist belt, your shorts or hat! Wherever you can clip a carabiner 😉

Be sure to have it on you race day to fill with everything from icy cold hydration to dense calorie finger foods.

Course Alterations for 100M & 50M

June 18, 2021

This may disappoint a few TRTER 100M & 50M entrants, but we think most will be quite pleased with these changes.

Here’s the story and the change:

The mileage of the newly designed course kept creeping higher for the 50 mile and 100 mile courses, as it was designed with a mapping program not with feet on the ground with a GPS tracker. When the snow melted and we started to actually get GPS tracks of new sections it became evident the mileage was going to be longer than anticipated – a lot longer.

I’ve made the decision to remove the infamous Red House loop altogether from the 50 mile to bring the mileage back closer to a 50 mile race. For the 100 mile race, the Red House loop is now limited to just one time. Yes, 100 milers will still do the Red House loop on your first lap, but on the second lap you will be going from Hobart to Tunnel Creek and head straight on to Diamond Peak.

This will bring the 50 mile race mileage to approximately 51 or 52 miles, and the 100 mile race mileage to 101 or 102 miles. The 50 mile race cutoff remains at 20 hours (same for the 55K) and the 100 mile remains at 36 hours.

In addition, we have eliminated the 100 mile awards ceremony at the conclusion of the 100 mile race. 100 mile finishers will receive their buckles as they finish. This is to accommodate the 36 hour cutoff and to limit a large crowd gathering in close proximity.

I believe these changes are for the good of the race participants, and our race volunteers. Our aid station captains and their crew are super excited to bring on the challenges of this new course. And I can tell you that it has created quite a buzz in the trail running community here—it’s the talk of the town!

Stay tuned in for final instructions leading up to the race. Train well in this final month before the race. Don’t get hurt, and don’t forget to taper. You’re going to need your climbing legs!

A New Course

April 24, 2021

“If you build it, they will come”

A line made famous in the movie Field of Dreams. And here we are – exactly 12-months after announcing the cancellation of TRTER 2020, we have the pleasure of announcing the 20th edition of the Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs is calling all lottery winners to toe the line on Saturday, July 17, 2021!

[Drum roll please]

We have another huge announcement: We are introducing a new course with the start/finish in Carson City, Nevada! Yes, you read that correctly. I know the traditional TRTER course is beloved and legendary. However, we have outgrown our footprint Spooner Lake Nevada State Park, and this summer some major remodeling is scheduled to take place at Spooner, thus limiting us even further. I have been dreaming of this course revision for quite some time and this is the year to introduce it. While we’ve built some new routes into the courses, the Tahoe Rim Trail is still in the spotlight.

The start and finish will be at Western Nevada College at 2201 W College Parkway, Carson City NV 89703.

This allows us to have ample parking and eliminates the need for busing runners to the Start, and for shuttling runners from the off-site parking to the State park and back.

Many from outside of Western Nevada do not realize that Carson City is literally a few miles from Spooner Lake Backcountry where the TRTER takes place. Some of my favorite runs were running from Carson City to Chimney Beach. No, you are not running to the beach, but you will start off climbing up Ash Canyon to Snow Valley Peak – a 4,400-foot climb to start your day off. A full course description is available on the TRTER website. We are working on new pace/cutoff charts and getting the course profiles and gpx files accessible.

If you are familiar with our Aid Stations, you’ll be happy to know that none of the major aid station are moving, Tunnel Creek and Hobart aid stations will continue to be major hubs on course, and Diamond Peak and the slightly stupid climb X2 are still part of the course. As I mentioned, full course descriptions are available on the website. I am working on updating the pace chart to the new course. The course is bigger and a little more taste of hell – the 100 mile will be approximately 104 miles and 21,863 feet of elevation gain. The mile 50 will be approximately 55 miles and 12,800 feet of elevation gain and the 55K will remain at 34 miles and 8,000 feet of elevation gain. Because of this, for the first year we are increasing the 100-mile cut-off to 36 hours – 5 pm on Sunday. The 50-mile and 55K will increase by one hour to 18-hours.

So, hoist a cold one and celebrate the fact TRTER is moving on. TRTER race management and staff of amazing volunteers are excited to host this race again for the 20th year. Some of them, mainly the captains of Hobart Aid Station, Kevin and Tammie Bigley and 50-mile Stonehenge captain, Carol Nageotte have been involved for all 20 years, plus! A special thank you to them and all of our volunteers – you are what makes this race as awesome as it is! And a special thank you to all our sponsors that have stuck with us during our COVID blackout.
